Thanks for the tips. As of Friday the company I was working for unexpectedly laid everyone off. No one even the VP had no clue this was coming we were totally blindsided and given just a few minutes to clear out our desks and be on our way. As I went into work Friday our secretary stopped us and said wait our boss wants to talk to us and I heard him talking to another coworker and new something was up but was not expecting to be unexpectedly laid off!!! The VP had been with this company for 21 yrs and we all thought after being laid off that the VP would have known something, told us to give us a warning but she was just like us, had no clue and was packing up her things. I'm still in shock that there was any kind of layoff especially since the company had just hired a few new employees, had gotten new clients and was in the process of getting all new office furniture!!! Thanks for these tips they really do help and also remember if you are unexpectedly laid off for no reason and no fault of your own like me file for unemployment. Unemployment will at least help a tad and I don't think filing for unemployment is embarrassing especially since it's not your fault and you did nothing wrong.

Great post. I echo the ones about having a side business -- it gives you another basket to put your eggs in.

Thanks for contributing!
